Typhoon Haiyan hygiene and water kit distibution – photos

Oxfam is urgently trying to reach 500,000 people affected by Typhoon Haiyan. Here are some photos of our distribution of hygiene and water kits in Cebu and Leyte.

Super typhoon Haiyan (locally Yolanda) was one of the most powerful typhoons ever recorded. An estimated 13 million people have been affected and some 3.5 million displaced.

Oxfam is urgently trying to reach 500,000 people affected by Typhoon Haiyan. Our priority is to reach the most vulnerable families with safe water and sanitation facilities.

Our rapid assessment teams have begun delivery of emergency water and sanitation in the most affected regions. In the first three weeks, we reached over 185,000 people with emergency relief.

Here’s a look at how we’ve reached some 26,500 people in weeks two and three of our response, with distribution of hygiene and water kits in Leyte and Cebu.

Geneva peace conference on Syria conflict must not be talks for the sake of talks

Nigel Timmins, who is heading up Oxfam’s response to the Syria Crisis, said: “This announcement is long overdue. The international community now needs to make sure that the proposed date does not slip. Today’s announcement could mark a critical step in bringing an end to the daily killings, displacement, and suffering taking place in Syria.

“But these must not be talks for the sake of talks – they must be backed up by measures that will make a real difference to those ordinary Syrians who have been suffering for so long. This must include a halt to armed violence and allowing those in need to access aid. The international community must help make this a reality by pressing for a ceasefire and halting the transfer of arms and ammunition to the country.”

“The talks themselves must be inclusive if they are to have any chance of success, all parts of Syrian society must be adequately represented, including non-military actors who will be crucial in the rebuilding and reconstruction of their country. With more than 100,000 people killed and millions displaced and living as refugees in neighboring countries, the Syrian people cannot wait any longer.”

“Fair Tuesday” Initiative Inspires Ethical Holiday Shopping

#FairTuesday is an ethical shopping initiative created in response to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The goal of #FairTuesday is to inspire conscious consumerism. “Fair Tuesday” features Fair Trade and eco-friendly brands, and is inviting other businesses to take a step towards sustainability.

Whether you are an individual, organization, or a member of the press, you can join the #FairTuesday movement in two simple ways: by buying one fair trade item on Tuesday, December 3rd and by helping us spread the word about the movement on social media using hashtag #FairTuesday. If you represent a non-fair-trade business, tell us what you are doing to make your practices more green and fair.
